Traveling with Your Pup: Must-Haves and Lessons Learned

May 30, 20242 min read

Memorial Day weekend often offers a precious opportunity for many of us to escape the daily grind, reconnect with loved ones, and indulge in some much-needed self-care. This year, my partner and I embarked on a journey to Oklahoma to visit his family, accompanied by our beloved furry companion, Maybelle. As a first-time traveler with our pup, I found myself both excited and slightly apprehensive about what lay ahead. However, armed with a meticulously packed bag and a heart full of anticipation, we set off on our adventure.

Reflecting on our trip, I can't help but share some insights and lessons learned from our experience. Here's a glimpse into what worked wonders for us and what I might reconsider for future travels:

Stuffy: Maybelle's delight knows no bounds when it comes to playing with her toys. Bringing along a new toy for her to enjoy during the trip proved to be a hit and added an extra element of joy to our journey.

TSA-Approved Carrier: Investing in a carrier that's not only TSA-approved but also spacious enough for Maybelle was a game-changer. It provided her with a comfortable and secure space during our travels, allowing us to navigate airports and car rides with ease.

Dog Travel Must Haves

Dog Supply Bag: Dubbed as Maybelle's very own diaper bag, this lifesaver contained everything from wee-wee pads to food, blankets, water, treats, and more. Having all her essentials neatly organized in one place made our travels significantly smoother and more convenient.

Poopy Bags with Flashlight: A seemingly small addition to our packing list, but one that proved its worth time and again, especially during late-night walks with Maybelle. The built-in flashlight came in handy for locating her business in dimly lit areas, ensuring a clean and hassle-free experience for all involved.

Yak Bones: These durable chew toys not only kept Maybelle entertained for hours on end but also helped alleviate any travel-induced stress or anxiety she may have experienced. Plus, their longevity meant we didn't have to worry about constantly replenishing her toy supply.

Dramamine: As it turns out, Maybelle is prone to motion sickness—a discovery we made during our journey. Thankfully, our veterinarian had recommended a half tablet of Dramamine to alleviate her symptoms, providing much-needed relief and ensuring a more comfortable travel experience for our furry friend.

In hindsight, while I may have overpacked on some items, each one served a purpose and contributed to making our trip as enjoyable and stress-free as possible. As we bid farewell to Oklahoma and return home, I carry with me not only cherished memories but also valuable lessons learned about the art of traveling with our four-legged companions.

So, to all fellow travelers out there—both human and canine alike—I urge you to embrace the adventure, pack your bags (and your pup's), and embark on journeys filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable moments. After all, the world is waiting to be explored, one paw print at a time.
